Testimony to Fremont Unified School District
December 14, 2011

My name is Marilyn Singer, and I am speaking for the League of Women Voters.

The League’s Action Committee has had an observer at the Health and Sex Education Advisory Committee for the past two years. The observer has kept the League informed about the process of recommending comprehensive sexual health curriculum for grades 4,5 and 6. We are here tonight to encourage you to accept the curriculum for grades 5/6  that has been revised and recommended by Superintendent Morris. We also recommend the adoption of the permission forms and the informational brochures.

The League  believes that the Board needs to adopt the curriculum now so that
students in grades 4/5/6 will have  sexual health instruction  this school year. The community wants our students to be safe, and that can best be accomplished
with comprehensive and factual curriculum materials.

All curriculum materials that the students will be receiving in the classroom will be available to the public for previewing. Ample notification of previews and times that the materials can be viewed at the District Office and at school sites will be circulated. Parents will be notified of the District’s opt-in  policy. If they choose to not have their student participate, they do not need to opt-in.

Please accept the Superintendent’s recommended curriculum so staff can be trained
to teach comprehensive and factual materials to the 4th, 5th and 6th  grade students this school year.
